In Australia you may hear them to referred to as a wine fridge or wine coolers but here at Liebherr we like to call them for what we design and build them to be, which is a wine cellar or a wine storage cabinet. Quite simply a Liebherr wine cellar is not a like a kitchen fridge. Why you may ask is it not a fridge? We all have a fridge in our home which keeps our food and drinks cold right? So surely a fridge is fine for storing wine? If you answered yes to the question, I’m afraid you have been misled.

Whilst a fridge might be a temporary solution for chilling a sparkling wine or champagne for a dinner party, a fridge is not the right place to store your wine for serving, even more so when it comes to long term storage and premium vintages. Generally, fridge temperature is 4°C or below which is actually colder than recommended storage and serving temperatures of white or red wine.

Therefore, in the 1980s Liebherr used their knowledge of refrigeration to expand their range to include wine cabinets, also referred to as a wine cellar, for your wine collection. A wine cabinet designed, and purpose built to house wine for both serving and wine storage. A home wine cellar with single zone, dual zones and triple zones offering a variable temperature range (5°C to 20°C) to accommodate both reds and whites, and all different types of wine at their optimum serving and storage temperatures.

So, what makes a wine cellar different from a fridge?

There are five principal points: Constant Temperature, Ideal Humidity, Perfect Air Quality, Vibration Free and UV Protection.

Constant Temperature

Liebherr wine cellars maintain precise temperatures between 5°C to 20°C. Minimising temperature variance is vital when it comes to long term storage to ensure wine is aged correctly.

Ideal Humidity

Liebherr wine cellars guarantee ideal conditions for the suppleness of the cork and the prevention of oxidization, with ideal humidity between 50% – 80% depending on ambient humidity.

Perfect Air Quality

Every zone within a Liebherr wine cellar has an activated charcoal filter to assist in maintaining perfect air quality which is decisive for preserving and maturing wine. The wooden shelving is also natural untreated beech wood shelves which is important as there are no chemical aromas introduced into the environment which can influence the wines flavour. Perfect air quality also reduces the instance of mould on corks and labels stored long term.

Vibration Free

To prevent wine from being disturbed all compressors are mounted on ‘isolation blocks’ designed to absorb vibrations.

UV Protection

Whilst selected models feature solid doors, all Liebherr tempered glass door wine cellars are tinted and double glazed to prevent harmful ultraviolet rays causing discolouration to the label and unwanted reactions to your wine.

Are you a wine connoisseur?

If you consider yourself a wine connoisseur and do not already have a wine cellar perhaps it’s time you asked yourself why not? If you are not storing your wine collection correctly, you might be disappointed when you open that next precious drop. We can guarantee you will not be disappointed if it’s been stored in a Liebherr wine cellar.
